Contact Lenses Q & A

How does a contact lenses exam work?

Although contact lenses correct your vision just as well (or sometimes better) than glasses do, contacts work quite differently because they’re actually worn on your eyes.

For this reason, your Family Eyecare of Linden eye doctor performs a complete contact lens evaluation before you try on contacts for the first time.

Your eye doctor checks your visual abilities with eye charts and other tests, and they also evaluate your eye health, particularly in the front portion of your eyes that the contacts will sit directly against.

Using cornea measurements and your unique prescription, your eye doctor determines which contact lenses will fit you best.

Next, you’ll insert a trial lens, so your eye doctor can evaluate the fit. A friendly Family Eyecare of Linden team member will teach you lens insertion and removal tips and tricks to make the transition from eyeglasses to contact lenses smoother.

What are the types of contact lenses?

Family Eyecare of Linden offers contact lenses for all needs.

Soft contacts

Most patients wear soft disposable lenses. These lenses are made of soft and flexible materials like plastic or hydrogel. Depending on the type you choose, you wear disposable lenses for a day, a week, or two weeks before you switch to fresh lenses.

Contacts for astigmatism

Having an additional eye problem such as astigmatism doesn’t have to keep you from wearing contacts today. Toric lenses are made to correct your vision and also fix problems like blurriness from astigmatism.

Multifocal contacts

Multifocal lenses contain two or more prescriptions, much like bifocal or trifocal glasses. Multifocal lenses are often great for patients suffering from presbyopia, age-related reading vision problems.

There’s a contact lenses solution for nearly anyone, and the Family Eyecare of Linden team will work with you to find the right lenses.

When should my child get contacts?

It depends on your child’s interest in contacts, how responsible they are, and other factors unique to them. Some children may be ready at age 10-12, while others may need to wait a few years.

If your child’s interested in contacts, talk to your Family Eyecare of Linden eye doctor during your child’s next comprehensive eye exam to determine whether they’re ready for contacts.

Even after getting contacts, both children and adults should keep a back-up pair of eyeglasses in their current prescription for emergencies like pink eye, dry eyes, or other situations that make it too uncomfortable to wear contacts.

Family Eyecare of Linden has contacts for every need, so book online or by phone now.
