Stellest Lens Q&A
What is myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a refractive error in which distant objects appear blurry while close objects remain clear. This occurs when the eye grows too long during childhood, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Myopia typically begins in school-age children and can progressively worsen as the eye continues to grow, potentially increasing the long-term risk of serious eye conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and early cataracts if it becomes high myopia.
Regular eye exams help diagnose and monitor myopia so that effective management strategies, like Stellest lenses, can be started early.
What are Stellest lenses?
Stellest lenses are a breakthrough development lens technology developed by Essilor that do more than just correct vision — they work to slow the progression of myopia in children. These lenses look like regular prescription glasses but incorporate Essilor’s patented H.A.L.T.® (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target) technology.
Their unique design generates a “volume of myopic defocus,” a visual signal that tells the eye to slow excessive growth — the root cause of worsening nearsightedness.
In September 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the marketing of Stellest spectacle lenses in the United States specifically to correct myopia and slow its progression in children aged 6 to 12 years old.
What are the benefits of Stellest lenses?
Stellest lenses offer multiple benefits for pediatric vision care:
- Clear vision correction: They provide visual clarity comparable to traditional single-vision lenses while correcting myopia
- Myopia progression control: Clinical data show that Stellest lenses can slow the progression of myopia by up to approximately 67–71% when worn consistently daily compared with standard lenses
- Non-invasive and easy to wear: As glasses, they do not require contact lens handling or eye drops, making them a practical option for many children and families
- Comfort and adaptation: Most children adapt to Stellest lenses quickly, often within a few days of regular wear
By addressing both vision clarity and eye growth, Stellest lenses support healthy visual development throughout the critical years of childhood.
Is my child a candidate for stellest lenses?
Stellest lenses are primarily recommended for children who:
- Are between 6 and 12 years old at the start of treatment, as outlined by FDA authorization
- Have been diagnosed with myopia (with or without astigmatism), determined during a comprehensive eye exam
- Wear corrective glasses and are committed to consistent daily wear, ideally 12+ hours per day, to achieve optimal myopia control benefits
A professional eye exam at Family Eyecare of Linden can determine if your child meets these criteria and help you understand how Stellest lenses could fit into a broader myopia management plan.
