Emergency Eye Care Q & A

Is a foreign body in the eye an emergency?

Yes, a foreign body in your eye is a serious eye emergency. Even very tiny things, like a grain of sand or an even smaller particle, can cause severe damage to your eyes.

Corneal foreign bodies

Corneal foreign bodies like shards of metal or glass can cause intense pain. Corneal abrasions can develop quite quickly when you have a foreign body in your cornea.

The abrasion can turn into an infected ulcer or even cause permanent eye damage if you don’t get corneal foreign body removal, followed by corneal abrasion treatment.

Conjunctival foreign bodies

A conjunctival foreign body is a particle that gets stuck in the membrane covering the front of your eye and inner eyelids.

Tiny foreign bodies may be too small to see with the naked eye, but your Family Eyecare of Linden optometrist can identify it during a slit lamp exam. Your optometrist can perform the conjunctival foreign body removal right away so you can start the healing.

You should never try to remove a foreign body on your own, with your fingers or tweezers or anything else. You can make the problem much worse, and possibly even cause permanent damage, so call your optometrist to get professional help instead.

Is pink eye an emergency?

It certainly can be. Pink eye causes inflammation, eye discharge, watery eyes, and other symptoms. It can be incredibly painful, too. Pink eye can be caused by both viral and bacterial infections. Contact lens-related pink eye is also possible due to wearing lenses too long.

Your Family Eyecare of Linden optometrist can diagnose pink eye and then prescribe pink eye treatment to give you fast relief.  Your treatment may include eye drops, oral medication, and changes in your eyewear.
